How to Release the Past Using Your Whole Brain

In many of my posts I like to talk about how releasing the past will improve your life and I often include easy tips to help you.

In this post I am going to change direction and talk about technique, specifically using your whole brain. While you don’t need to understand how the poetry of emotion process works to use it successfully, having more knowledge can improve your results.

Don’t worry, I will keep this post brief and easy to read.

So, if you want to look behind the curtain and learn more about using your whole brain, keep reading.

The two sides of your brain

I am sure that you know that you have a right brain and a left brain. Basically, these are the two lobes of your brain and they have different functions.

The left brain is the linear side and likes lists, rules, and consistency. The right brain is the “wild side” and likes creativity, finding patterns, and new ideas.

Most of us have a preferred side, but we use both sides. For example, Anita works in an office using her left brain, but she often relies on intuition from her right brain.

How your brain communicates with you

You are probably most familiar with communication from your left brain. We call this thinking. We think using our senses, so thinking can be in words/sounds, pictures, or feelings. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) classifies these three ways of thinking as: V for visual, A for auditory, and K for kinesthetic (or feeling).

The right brain communicates in a totally different way. I have already mentioned intuition. It also communicates using dreams, symbols, metaphors, and stories.

Have you ever gone to bed thinking about a problem with no obvious solution? The next morning you remember a dream, maybe even a crazy dream, and this dream points you toward a solution. That is how your right brain communicates with you.

Therapy and the two brains

Let’s look at two common therapies. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on your thinking and how it affects your feelings and behaviors. This is an effective therapy and it works best in a structured environment with a therapist. This therapy emphasizes your left brain.

Art therapy allows you to describe your emotions and beliefs using art. Art therapy is effective in helping people express feelings that are hidden or are too complex for words. This is a less structured form of therapy and focuses on the right brain.

Using your whole brain

The poetry of emotion uses both sides of your brain to help you release painful emotions from childhood. It is a structured process with definite steps and specific questions. Your left brain likes this.

You will be asking your right brain to answer the questions. Now, this might seem odd, but your right brain is able to “think” in different ways to find creative solutions to what seemed like unsolvable problems.

Your right brain will be describing your emotions using metaphors, symbols, and images. I call these descriptions emotional poems. Then you will use the power of a story to release the past and reclaim your true emotions.

If this sounds too complicated, I created a fill-in-the-blank workbook to help you get started. The workbook acts like your left brain and your right brain answers the questions. Once your two brains learn to communicate with each other, the process becomes surprisingly quick and easy.
